Newcomer Mental Health Services
Many people who arrive in Canada have faced great difficulties in getting here.
If you or your family are among these people, it is important to work with a guide who can help you recover and strengthen your resilience.
People who have lived through trauma often have mental, emotional and spiritual scars that impact their daily lives and relationships. But it is possible to find calm, strength, and new ways to move forward.
This program is for individuals, people in relationships, and families to get personal or group support and guidance from someone who shares your language and your values, to deal with the impacts of trauma. We provide mental health support (therapy) to newcomers who have experienced trauma and are experiencing moderate to severe impact of that trauma in their current daily lives. Services are provided in multiple languages and with respect for people’s cultural traditions. The goal is to help promote recovery and resilience.
You may be connected to other programs like psychiatry and psychology services, and community connections through our Newcomer Community Development Program.
And this program team can also help you with practical supports like finding housing, getting medical appointments, and ensuring you have enough food on hand.
All newcomers are eligible for this program regardless of status, including government assisted refugees (GARs), privately Sponsored Refugees (PSRs), refugee claimants, international students, immigrants (economic, provincial nominee, etc.), temporary foreign workers (TFWs) and newcomers who have become Canadian citizens.
Support for ethno-cultural and faith groups is also available to help communities learn about the causes, signs and symptoms of mental health and how to access mental health supports.
